All in all, I'd probably place the date as in the early-to-mid-1950s based on what we know (or think we know). The overall dark impression may be due to the hard shadows present in the photo as it was obviously taken on a very sunny day. Hard to be sure from this photo, but though it does look rather dark, the main Box colour appears to be about the same tone as the background on the top signs rather than significantly lighter (pre-1950) or significantly darker (late-1950s and on).

White windows predate the darker paint, with the white windows seeming to show up circa 1950 with a more or less medium blue paint scheme in some localities, and the dark Royal blue being added to this some time around 1955 or later, depending on the region. Not sure why a horn would be mounted on top of a traffic post, but the way it crosses the Met Box's roof and sign area strongly suggests it is in front of it rather than on top.Īs to the dating of the colour changes - we don't really have enough hard dated photos to be absolutely sure, but it appears that they were not all done everywhere at the same time. In looking at blowups, it seems like the white bits are attached to the far traffic post (there are two posts almost in line with each other) rather then the Box, with the thin rectangular part to the right looking like a sign and the shape to the left looking a bit like a horn of some kind (or a horn with another sign in front of it). A blowup of the hi-res (circa 1950 per Frith) -Ī Mark 3, as expected (note we can see one open window).
